Every catechist receives training before starting serving with children, but is expected to continue to learn and grow in faith. The Diocese of Joliet asks that every catechist participate in at last 6 hours of learning every year. Enrichment meetings are held at the parish several times a year and there are diocesan and regional events for catechists. Attendance at any of these can be credited as hours of formation.
